RM 300000 worth of computers, pirated and unlicensed software seized in a raid

Shah Alam chief enforcement officer Othman Nawang said the raid was part of a week long nationwide crackdown against piracy of all types including movies, music and software at all levels.

"This is a collaborative effort between the ministry and several private sector initiatives to raise awareness and educate the public against using pirated products.

"The raid was conducted based on the information pro vided by The Software Alliance formerly known as Business Software Alliance (BSA) as it involved software piracy," he said.

Othman said after a comprehensive audit, five computers and 30 copies of suspected pirated software including Adobe, Autodesk and Microsoft valued at RM289,300 were seized for further investigation.

"Since 2010, we have conducted no less than 130 raids in Selangor, resulting in seizures of computers and suspected pirated software worth in excess of RM20 million.

"This year, the ministry has conducted three raids, seizing more than RM366,300 worth of computers and suspected pirated software," he added.

He explained that based on Copyright Act 1987, only licensed and legal software can be used in business and if found guilty, an organisation and its management will be liable to fine of RM2,000 to RM20,000 for each illegal copy of software and company directors and/or senior management may also face imprisonment for up to five years.

Also present yesterday was BSA Asia Pacific Senior Di rector Roland Chan.

Chan said members of the public can support the fight against software piracy by calling BSA hotline at 1-800-887- 800 to report companies using illegal software.

Online reports can also be lodged through the BSA website at www.bsa.org and a reward of up to RM20,000 is payable for each information received that leads to a successful action, said Chan.
