A former Denver Sheriff's Department administrator stole more than $20,000 in Turbo-Tax software from Target and submitted false tax returns in which he failed to report $233,000 in income that he used for gambling, according to allegations in a grand jury indictment.

Michael Than, 46, turned himself in to the Jefferson County Sheriff's Office on Friday on a warrant following a grand jury indictment. READ: The indictment against Michael Than.

Than allegedly used $233,000 in untraceable income at Ameristar Casino between 2010 and 2012, according to Jefferson County District Court records released Tuesday.

Than, who ran the downtown jail until his resignation Dec. 20, under-reported his income in 2013 by $111,902, meaning he underpaid Colorado income taxes by $5,281, according to court records.

According to the indictment, Than collected fees of $300 each for doing taxes for clients, but failed to report the income. He also received more than $60,000 by selling 1,288 packages of Turbo-Tax software on eBay and PayPal, the documents indicate.

A source indicated to The Denver Post that Than was caught hiding software in packages of dog food that he purchased from Target.

Than posted a $10,000 bond, according to court records.

Than's duties included overseeing the Downtown Denver Detention Center, court services, the civil process unit and the Correctional Care Medical Facility, according to the department's website. Kirk Mitchell: 303-954-1206, http://ift.tt/1lardgs or http://ift.tt/1mH9EjG
